Spanish Charity Lottery Moves Online
21/01/2008: The Spanish Government has authorised traditional charity lottery ONCE to join the main state lottery in selling lottery products over the internet in Spain. The move comes as the Spanish Government finds itself under pressure, including from ONCE, to regulate internet gambling in general.
Spain Edges Towards Remote Gambling Regulation
08/01/2008: Propelled by a motion passed by the Spanish Congress in late December, the Spanish Government is now expected to draw up comprehensive, nationally binding regulations for remote gambling. March’s general elections will likely delay the process, however, and contrary to some reports in the country, the motion does not establish a timetable for new legislation to be introduced.
Spanish Authorities Pursuing Complaints Against Internet Gambling Operators
27/09/2007: Complaints filed by the country’s land-based industry and charity lottery operator ONCE have provoked the Spanish Treasury to begin an investigation into the legal status of online gambling companies active in Spain. At issue is the question of possible tax fraud charges and at the same time reports suggest that a judge in Barcelona has opened investigations into the Spanish arm of Sportingbet.
Looming Elections Block Spain’s Path To Regulation
14/09/2007: Members of the opposition Popular Party in the Spanish Congress have proposed legislation to regulate online gambling but observers believe that concrete legislative developments may have to wait until after the dust has settled on the general elections scheduled for March 2008.
