UEFA Scales Back Betting Corruption Probe

28/02/2008: European football’s governing body UEFA has met with representatives of the European gambling industry in order to improve its monitoring of betting patterns as it battles against match fixing and corruption in its competitions. Meanwhile, it has emerged that of the 15 matches the governing body reported to Europol as being suspicious only one game is still being investigated.

Italy’s Internet Blocking Comes Of Age

25/02/2008: Two years have now passed since the historic decision by the Italian government to begin blocking websites controlled by “unauthorised operators.” The Italian regulator AAMS believes results have vindicated its controversial decision while blocking has since been adopted by many other European jurisdictions.

AML Bill Smoothes Way For Irish Casino Laws

13/02/2008: Irish casino regulation has taken a step forward with the publication this week of a new bill that aims to bring the country’s broader money laundering rules into line with the EU’s Third Money Laundering Directive. Casinos and clubs will have to comply with the new rules, from which they have previously been excluded.

Paris Court Rules Against Bookmakers In Football Trademark Dispute

12/02/2008: A French Court has found that bookmakers Unibet and William Hill exploited the name of Italian football club Juventus for commercial purposes whilst promoting bets on a 2005 Champions League match between the Italian club and Real Madrid. The French verdict contradicts a ruling delivered earlier by a court in Belgium and is likely to be appealed.

Dutch Minister Halts Online Casino Vote

06/02/2008: Minister of Justice Hirsch Ballin has postponed a scheduled Senate vote on a bill to grant a temporary, exclusive licence to Holland Casino to offer online casino gaming, amidst concern that the proposal was set to be rejected by Dutch Senators. The move comes less than a week after the European Commission chose to extend infringement proceedings against Sweden to include Svenska Spel’s online poker monopoly.

Italy Bows To European Relicensing Pressure

05/02/2008: The Italian government has confirmed that they will run a new tender process “by the end of the year” to settle the vexed question of the 329 horseracing betting shop licenses that were controversially extended eight years ago. The announcement draws a line under the negotiations between the Economy Ministry and the EU that took place at the end of January but leaves the existing license holders fuming.

Czech Betting Operator Gears Up For Online Regulation

01/02/2008: Czech lottery and sports betting operator Sazka has launched a new service to allow its customers to select bets over the internet before placing them at retail outlets or over the telephone. Whilst online gambling is not currently permitted in the Czech Republic, Sazka says that the new service would be able to offer remote gambling directly if new legislation was introduced.
