Mats Odell Public Announcement
The new minister responsible for gaming, Mr Mats Odell, has made a public announcement stating that the new government's policy is to break up the state monopoly on the Swedish gaming market and to replace it with a system in which Swedish and foreign gaming operators would be eligible to apply for a gaming licence in Sweden; this includes online gaming.
It is understood that if the EU forces its Member States to open up their markets, under fairly strict regulations, then the Swedish Government will recognise another EU licenses. However, if the EU does not manage to do this, then the Swedish licence will be mandatory and the Government will look at ways of preventing un-licensed operators getting access to the market.
